Vacation!!

We just got back from spending a week in Michigan.  My grandfather has a house and cabin on Lake Brevort in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  Right by both Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.  Growing up, this was where our family would go on vacation almost every year.  Josh and I went a couple of years ago with my family and have been wanting to go back since.  It worked out for us this year to take a week and head north.

The drive up was long but Harrison was a champ and since we left early in the morning he slept the majority of the way.  We got there on Saturday afternoon and the weather was beautiful.  It was a nice break from the humidity and rain we've had in Morgantown.  The local town does fireworks on Saturday nights, so we headed to St. Ignace to watch the fireworks over Lake Huron.  I forgot how late the sunset is and it was still light at 10pm so the fireworks didn't start until 10:30.  A little late for Harrison but he enjoyed them and fell asleep on the way back to the cabin.

One of my favorite things about visiting this part of Michigan is Mackinac Island.  It's a little island in Lake Huron, about a mile from the mainland.  The only way over is by ferry and motorized vehicles aren't allowed on the island.  If you want to get around you walk, bike, or take a horse drawn carriage.  They have a really cute main street and some fun history sites.  My favorite thing to do is rent a bike and bike the perimeter of the island.  It's 8 miles around and paved and you get to see beautiful views of the water.  With all this in mind, we decided to go on Monday.  The day was supposed to be nice.  When we got up it was pretty overcast, which isn't unusual.  We caught the first ferry and made it over by 8am.  We rented bikes and headed out knowing now that it was going to rain.  Luckily we made it around the island before the rain hit.  Sadly, the rest of the day was spent walking around in a steady rainfall.  But we made the most of it and had a good time.

Funny thing was, that was the worst day weather wise the whole trip.  We spent the rest of the week relaxing and swimming in Lake Michigan.  Josh and I had a great time having the whole week together without any other obligations.  We both got to read some books and spend quality time with Harrison.  Lake Michigan has a great beach and Harrison liked the water even though it was cold.  He didn't really care for sand and had to wash his hands off frequently.  We crossed the Mackinac Bridge one day to spend time a cute little Mackinac City.  They have fun shops and my favorite lighthouse.  We even took Harrison to see Monsters University.  He made it 10 minutes in before falling asleep.  Luckily we didn't have to pay for him. We were sad to go but look forward to getting back there next summer!

Harrison quickly made himself at home wearing daddy's hat.

He made sure to familiarize himself with the fridge.

Playing at Lake Michigan's beach

The water is pretty cold but he didn't care.

Enjoys wearing the goggles all the time.

On the ferry heading over to Mackinac Island

Awake as the ferry got going.

Asleep within about two minutes.

Stopped during our bike ride to play in the waters of Lake Huron

Pretty rainbow to end the day with.

This guy likes smores

The Mackinac Bridge

It was a little too cold to swim on this day.

My favorite lighthouse.  Old Mackinac Lighthouse

Harrison took some time out of his day to help Bert and Ernie put out some fires.

Built a sand castle that Harrison got to destroy.
